Display - Strip Merchandisers
14 January 2007
I'm always looking for more and better ways to display our merchandise at swap meets.  The dairy crates discussed in Selling Organization work great.  The drawback is they sit on the ground - they're not in your face.  My goal for any new display fixture is to minimize weight and size on anything we pack in the truck.  I need more merchandise not more fixtures.

I recently discovered strip merchandisers or "candy canes" as I call them.  You've seen them, you've used them - maybe not at swap meets but at the grocery store, convenience store, WalMart.  Small snack items are usually displayed on them.  They're a long metal strip with little clips to hold small items and a hook on the top to hang them on just about anything.  There are also tabletop models available.  I bought about 2 dozen of these for about $2 each, new.  They are working so well, I'm going back for more.

Here's some advantages to consider when using strip merchandisers:
  • Instant display - take them out of your trailer/truck, hang them up and you're open for business (assuming you've pre-loaded them and stored them that way as I do).
  • In your face - they give you the ability to put items at eye level
  • Lightweight
  • Easy on the merchandise - shows off product yet keeps it neat and clean
  • Easy visual to see how things are selling - empty space means a sale
  • Hang anywhere - from the side of your truck/trailer to gridwall, even your side view mirrors
We set up "kiosks" of sorts with 3 or 4 sections of 2x6 gridwall and hang these all over it.  It takes a lot less time than putting up individual hooks and hanging merchandise individually.  In the truck, they're the last thing to go in and the first to come off.  They travel fine hanging from the shelves with the merchandise attached.  Just don't try to put heavy things on them and they'll work great.

Just Google for "strip merchandiser" and you'll find them offered by plenty of merchants in all price ranges.

Don't carry it home again, sell it!  Suzanne
